Quick & Easy Chocolate Recipes: Chocolate Chili!

Quick & Easy Chocolate Recipes: Chocolate Chili!

If you’ve procrastinated & are looking for a chocolate recipe for tonight (It’s Valentine’s Day, by the way….) then treat your Valentine or whole family to a dinner that incorporates the standard ingredient in a not-so-standard way! Chocolate Chili!!!!

I love dishes that are weird & shocking at first glance! When I first saw Paula Deen’s Chocolate Shrimp Tortilla Soup (using cocoa powder), I had to try it.   A year later, I was helping a friend move apartments, and she took us out to a new mexican restaurant.   I could have sworn there was chocolate & sugar in my dish, and everyone thought I was crazy! !  So…. my curiosity got the best of me. It turns out, I was eating mole sauce which contains chocolate, a staple in mexican cuisine! It helps balance the heat, improves the texture, and provides color to almost any dish!  Since  my tortilla soup skills were pretty good, I wondered how I could incorporate chocolate  into my chili recipe….. especially to make a good gluten-free option.

The gluten-free venture was pretty easy, because I figured out a spice mixture containing all of my favorite spices by looking at the back of a chili packet – omitting the extra stuff. The cocoa thing was almost a bust…… but I had straight-up chocolate in the house – Hershey’s to be exact.  If you add greek plain yogurt in place of sour cream, sprinkle on some veggie/soy cheese (if you dare), and take into account the benefits of spices and chocolate……. This is a very healthy treat!

Gluten-Free Chocolate Chili

1         pound lean ground beef

1        clove of garlic (minced)

1         small-medium onion (chopped)

1         14.5 oz can of diced tomatoes – chili ready; + 1/3 can of water

1         15 oz can of kidney beans (To make a bigger recipe, add a can of black beans & a little extra water)

2         tablespoon Chili Powder

1         teaspoon Ground Cumin

1         teaspoon Oregano

1         teaspoon Coriander

¼       teaspoon Red Pepper Flakes (optional; or add more if you like it hot!)

¼       teaspoon Ancho Chile Pepper (optional; I had this already…….)

½-1   Hershey Chocolate Bar….. taste it…. Add more if you dare!

  1. Brown the beef & the onions.
  2. Add everything else.
  3. Bring to a Boil.
  4. Simmer for 15 min. & Serve hot!

Corn chips, Cilantro, Sour Cream, Cheese…………… Do your own math on this part!

Happy Valentine’s Day!
