Outdoor Pests: My Grandfather the Bug Zapper

Outdoor Pests: My Grandfather the Bug Zapper

Because we didn’t have that much of a winter in the South, there are bugs EVERYWHERE I look this summer.  My dog even barked at a mosquito the other day, because he’d finally had enough!  I recently bought some materials to try a bug deterring project (coming soon!), and whilst in the gardening & outdoor department, I ran upon something that made me smile – the bug zapper.  It makes me smile, because it makes me think of my Grandfather.

My Grandfather was a genius who was constantly thinking “outside-the-box,” and most of the time he saw things everybody else missed.  As a farmer, he dealt a lot with bugs and the outdoors.  If there was one thing he didn’t like, it was bugs “in the house.”  He kept a Bug Zapper (you know the fluorescent blue bulbs encased in a little birdhouse-looking contraption that electrocutes bugs…) IN THE HOUSE.  It hung by the refrigerator, and was turned on in the evenings.  During dinner, “ZAP!”  While you watched TV, “ZAP!” I remember spending the night, and being awoken in my slumber by a “ZAP!” and the smell of burning….bugs.    When asked “Why do you have that thing in the house?  It says on the label to only use it outside.”  He’d shake his head & say, “I don’t care if the bugs live or die out there, it’s the ones in my house that are bothering me!”

In that same aisle of Wal-Mart, next to the Bug Zapper, was something that I am sure my Grandfather is laughing about right now.  The Zap Master makes a hand-held bug zapper that requires batteries, and can kill billions of bugs with one swat!  It looks like a badminton racket!

Today is the 4th of July.  Arm yourself.   (tee hee hee)
