Licorice – A Sponsor of Happy Birthdays!

Licorice – A Sponsor of Happy Birthdays!

When I went to Italy, I recall having an upset stomach one evening after one of many fantastic meals made by my Italian friends. One of those friends reached in her purse & said, “Ecco.” (“Here.”) She handed me a tiny tablet that was smaller than a tic tac, and said “Put it under your tongue & suck on it.” It was so black, it actually looked like she might be giving me a “pill of death.” (ha!) It had a pretty bitter taste for a short while, but it ended on a VERY sweet note. It also ended with me wearing a black tongue for about 2 days. (I accidentally let it slip out from under there a few times. It stains the tongue.) I’m not completely sure what it was called, but it was a licorice tablet of some...

Why Are There So Many Bugs This Year? 2012

Why Are There So Many Bugs This Year? 2012

Do you have grilling plans this weekend?  How about a camping or hiking trip in your near future? Are you playing with the kids and pets outside more?  Are you hitting the pool or lake as often as you can? Do you find yourself on your front or back porch several times a week? If you live in the Southern United States it’s summertime, which means you’re doing some or all of the above activities.  If you’re doing those activities, you probably have guests you don’t even know joining your good times.  In one week, I visit my general practitioner for my yearly physical and the veterinarian to get my pooch his own yearly check-up & shots. Both doctors told me that this summer was going to be one of the worst when it comes to BUGS. For...

Summer Goal: Healthier Habits – Step One: Eat More Turkey?

Summer Goal: Healthier Habits – Step One: Eat More Turkey?

Summer is here.  Bathing suit season is here, and there’s nothing you can do about it. That “I’ll go on a diet/exercise program after I eat this ice cream” statement has expired. DON’T LET THAT RAIN ON YOUR PARADE.  There are 3 reasons why summer is a great time to go ahead & start doing something good for your body! 1. The Sun:  The sun shines more during this time of the year & automatically makes you happier!  Why not choose summer to start making good choices when you’re already in a better mood! 2. The Outdoors: BBQ’s, pool parties, outdoor-themed vacations (the beach, camping) – are all happening more during this time! The weather is good for gettin’ out & gettin’ active.  No...

Glowing Rectangles Give You Popcorn Brain

Glowing Rectangles Give You Popcorn Brain

HAPPY FIRST DAY OF SPRING!  Why are you in front of the computer?  Read this…… & then go do something fun with SOMEONE or some activity….. OUTSIDE…… I am a big fan of technology, otherwise I wouldn’t blog.  But my blog is useless unless people actually get away from the computer & cook a new recipe, make weird stuff, or embark on new adventures! I recently read an article that confirms what I’ve already noticed about a lot of people in my life – especially children.  The subject was technology & the controversy was its ability to change the structure of your brain to something that resembles “popcorn brain.” (CNN article here.) I’ve noticed people not being able to have a conversation that last more than 5 minutes, and the...

Touchscreen Devices: Why is My Thumb Hurting?

Touchscreen Devices: Why is My Thumb Hurting?

If you are an avid & consistent touchscreen phone or listening device user, you might consider limiting your daily time on your device.  All too quickly, you may notice you have some slight discomfort in your thumb. I looked it up & some folks are calling it  “Iphone Thumb” or “Blackberry Thumb”.  This is similar to “Skier’s Thumb” – basically, a thumb condition created by continual overuse of a specific muscles.  Why blog about this?  Well…. I’ve had something similar happen on five occasions.   Disclaimer: I am not a doctor.  If you have my same problem – look it up – there are a lot of articles about this rapidly growing circumstance! 1.  I was hooked to a golfing video game one snowy Christmas & my thumb...

Redheads & Pain

Redheads & Pain

This blog today is for all those out there have redheads in their lives! When I was about 5, I clocked a nurse in the county health department, and when I was about 6 I kicked the family dentist in his oh-so-sensitive spot.  One might look at those two isolated incidents and say, “You might have anger issues.” Those that know me, know I am not a physically violent person, but I read a few articles this week that might explain a little about it.  IT’S MY RED HAIR.   Yes, I do have a fiery personality (or so I’m told), but that’s not exactly why…. “Redheads have different pain thresholds,” said one doctor.  They don’t take to medicine the same way as everyone else,” said another.  “She’ll need a butterfly needle to make it easier to...
