Beans, Beans, They’re Good for Your Heart….

Happy New Year!  ‘Wanna save money & be healthier? BEANS!  (Who cares about a little gas….)  Seriously, heart disease plagues Americans, and we all need to get serious about healthy proteins.  The bonus:  it’s inexpensive done this way. My momma’s been saying this for a long time in my adult life, but like all people, we don’t hear our momma the first time.  “Have you cooked some beans?”  “What about some dried beans?”  I finally talked to her about it & discovered a great way to get my protein in without the cholesterol. Don’t be scared.  You can dress these up with relish as a side dish, or you could make it the main attraction by adding tomato, onion, salsa, cilantro, sour cream,...

Squeeze Out the Last of Summer with Frozen Yogurt!

Squeeze Out the Last of Summer with Frozen Yogurt!

I LOVE ICE CREAM.  I was raised to love it, & I come by my obsession honestly.  My papaw insisted the freezer contain a bucket at all times.  There’s a catch, though…..our cholesterol and sugar levels sometimes don’t “love” it like we do!  This summer I made a bit of a change – I opted for frozen yogurt a little more often when I got the cravin’. It has tons of health benefits, and it’s lower in fat than ice cream. I remember when frozen yogurt was “all the rage” with TCBY’s popping up all over the place & Dairy Queen offering it as a substitution in their sweet treat recipes.  We didn’t frequent TCBY (because Dairy Queen was just so darn good), and that may or may not have led to...

‘Want Tina Turner Legs? Eat more “Greens!”

‘Want Tina Turner Legs? Eat more “Greens!”

Up until recently, I had never cooked “greens” before.  By “Greens,” I mean the mushy-looking green stuff in a bowl on the table at 75 % of the meals I had with my grandparents.  When people in the south say “Greens” a lot of folks are referring to collard greens, a staple in soul food.  However, my family, cooks mostly “Turnip Greens.” What’s the difference between Collard Greens & Turnip Greens? ~Both are from the cabbage family. ~ Turnip Greens are sweeter & Collards have a more bitter taste. ~Turnip Green leaves are a bit smaller & more tender than Collards. ~BOTH are packed with vitamins & are super-foods according to nutritionists. They are an excellent source of calcium. If...

Boo Boo Bling: Really Makes It “All Better!”

Boo Boo Bling: Really Makes It “All Better!”

Recently I was visiting someone’s home, and she lent me a band-aid.  My flip flops, as cute as they were, had rubbed a blister on my toe.  She reached in the cabinet, and said “What do you want – Toy Story or Cars?” I picked “Cars” (I think), and quickly put it on.  It certainly did the job, but I noticed it looked like a sticker!  My mom even asked me, “Why do you have a sticker on your foot?”  I realized I probably have had 2 fun band-aids in my life – a hot pink one in college, and this “Cars” themed bandage.  How fun was this?! I can see how these colorful cover-ups cheer up little ones after accidents. That “Cars” sticker reminded me of another band-aid incident that...
